Goal Setting

GOAL SETTING!
I love goals! When set the right way, they are an invaluable tool for success.

  • Write it down
The physical act of pen to paper sends a neurological message. This body-mind connection makes your goal tangible. Use "I will" instead of "I want" when you are writing your goal. This statement change is powerful, positive and makes your goal real!

  • The S.M.A.R.T. Technique!
    • Specific
Focus on the "what". What is your goal? Make your goal clear and specific. Now, shift to the "why". Why is this your goal? Asking yourself why will affirm, establish and motivate your goal.
    • Measurable
Measure your success by tracking improvements using time, dates or amounts. Precision is key here. Reviewing your success frequently will motivate you and show you the progress you have made.
    • Attainable
Make you goal realistic. Find the balance between challenging and achievable by using incremental goals to help you reach the outcome of your overall goal.
    • Relevant
Those smaller goals, or tactics, which lead to your main goal should be relevant to what you are trying to achieve. For example, I wouldn't set a goal to do 10 pull ups if my overall goal is to run a marathon. Be sure to separate what is important from what is a distraction.
    • Time
Give your goal a deadline. This will encourage urgency, give your goal a higher level of importance, and prevent you from procrastinating.

  • Motivation!
    • Make your goal visible
      • Create a vision board: paste motivational pictures relevant to your goal on a poster board. Hang it somewhere you will be sure to look at it daily!
      • Find a picture that keeps you focused on your goal. Set it as the background on your phone or computer, tape it up in your office, or any place you know you can't miss it.
    • Upcoming events.
      • What upcoming events will motivate you to reach your goal?
    • Establish a support system
      • By telling people that you have a goal, you create a verbal, public commitment and I promise this will keep you moving forward to succeed.
